Throughout the 1940s and 1950s politic view called Mccartyishm when people in USA feared a communism occurred. This period was similar to period of a Red Scare. During that time many people were accused of being a communist, and it destroyed their life. They lost their jobs, their careers. The most famous example of Mccarthyism was the Hollywood Blacklist. The statement “We will not knowingly employ a Communist or a member of any party or group which advocates the overthrow of the government of the United States” actually was the beginning of the Hollywood blacklist. Nobody really admit that the Black list existed. Books such as Red Channels were published in order to keep track of communists and leftish organizations and individuals.
There were many critics of various aspects of Mccarthyism. As the USA moved to mid fifties the attitudes and institutions of McCarthyism weakened. Since the time of McCarthy, the word “McCarthyism” entered American speech as term for a variety of distasteful practices.
